PTTEP to sign gas deal with Burma

• Published: 29/07/2010 at 01:16 PM

• Online news:

PTT Exploration and Production Plc (PTTEP) will on Friday sign an agreement to purchase natural gas from M9 or Zawtika Field with Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise (MOGE), the national oil firm of Bur- ma , Energy Minister Wannarat Channukul said on Thursday.

Mr Wannarat said he will visit Burma tomorrow to witness the signing of the deal.“This is a good news for Thailand as PTTEP has ssuceeded in finding an overseas energy source to ensure energy security for the country,” the minister said.

The M9 field has an estimated total natural gas reserve of 1.4 trillion cubic meters. MOGE will supply 240 million cubic metres a day to Thailand and another 60 million for domestic sales, according to Mr Wannarat.

Under the 30-year agreement, MOGE will start supplying natural gas to PTTEP in 2013.

He said the gas pact will ensure sufficient natural gas for the production of electricity for domestic use and for vehicles running on natural gas.

The natural gas to be supplied by the Burmese state firm would help reduce imports of bunker oil by about 2.4 billion litres a year and save the country about 400 billion baht annually, he said.

This deal would also lengthen the Trans-Asean gas pipeline from the current 2,800km to 3,020km and help ensure energy security in the Asean region, Mr Wannarat said.

I don't think so.
FYI, Current the gas revenue of Myanmar is 2.5 billions a year. Even it is 2 times higher in next 3 to 5 years it will only around 5 t 6 billions dollars. Saudi currently earn 160 billions from oil and gas revenue. However, Myanmar has other natural resources. But I believe human resources are the most important factor.

Please check the unit.
1 tcm (trillion cubic metre) = 35 tcf (trillion cubic feet).

M9 reserve is 1.4 tcf not tcm. So it is only about 40 bcm(billion cubic metre).M9 daily production is 240 mcf not mcm.

Myanmar estimated reserve is about 2.5 tcm (about 87 tcf) but current proven reserve is about 19 to 22 tcf. It can not be said very large compare to the world but it is quite significant in asia.

However we need to consider for our own domestic use. Let me give a comparison. Our current gas generation is not even enough for Thailand electricity consumption. Thailand population is about 70 millions and Myanmar is about 60 millions.

Btw, I am not an expert. I am just interested in natural resource for our country development. What I found is that only the high level education system push us to become a developed country. Our resources are not enough for future consumption! We cannot expect exporting in the long term.

**Keep Going MDC**
