Join us on this amazing journey that will take you from the vibrant city of Bangkok into the hidden world of Burma, now known as Myanmar.
After exploring bustling Bangkok and fascinating Yangon (formally Rangoon) you will travel to Mandalay to join the ‘Road to Mandalay’ for a truly memorable seven day meander along the mighty Irrawaddy River before spending the final three nights of your adventure at exquisite Inle Lake.
As soon as you set foot in this hauntingly beautiful land you will slip back into a bygone and tranquil era and witness a way of life that has hardly changed for centuries. During your stay you will catch glimpses of sacred cities, golden pagodas and crimson cloaked monks. You will visit traditional villages, colourful markets, sacred monasteries and schools where the children will capture your hearts.
As you would expect from Orient-Express, the on board experience is one of uncompromising elegance. All of the cabins are beautifully designed, with air-conditioning and en-suite facilities. On deck there is a swimming pool and comfortable, shaded seating. The lounges and bars are perfect for enjoying afternoon tea or a sunset drink and the dining is a constant treat with the menu showcasing the finest gourmet Eastern and Western delicacies.

YOUR ITINERARY
Friday 30th September: Overnight flight from London to Bangkok.
Saturday 1st October: Arrive Bangkok and transfer to the Mandarin Oriental Hotel for a two night stay.
Sunday 2nd October: Morning city tour which includes visits to the Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha.
Monday 3rd October: Fly from Bangkok to Yangon (Rangoon) and transfer to The Governor’s Residence for a two night stay.
After settling in you will visit the key sights of Yangon’s city centre with its magical colonial buildings, before ending your day enjoying the sunset at the spectacular Buddhist centerpiece, the Shwedagon Pagoda. Dinner at leisure either at your hotel or in one of the many restaurants in Yangon.
Tuesday 4th October: After breakfast at the hotel, the day is yours to enjoy at leisure. Lunch and dinner by your own arrangement.
Wednesday 5th October: Morning flight from Yangon to Mandalay. On arrival transfer to the Road To Mandalay berthed on the Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy) River at Shwe Kyet Yet. After lunch, enjoy a guided tour of the key sights of Mandalay regarded as the centre of Burmese culture and Buddhist learning. Return to Road To Mandalay stopping enroute to admire the sunset over the river.
Thursday 6th October: After an early breakfast visit a local village for a walking tour. This traditional Burmese village gives you the opportunity to discover the Burmese way of life first hand - from farming and handicrafts to spirit houses and tea-shops. The ship gets underway mid morning and begins its journey south. The rest of the day is spent relaxing on board observing the fascinating local river life from the top deck. An on board guide lectures on the Myanmar way of life.
Friday 7th October: The ship arrives at Bagan where over 2,000 temples and pagodas are scattered over an awe-inspiring plain beside the river. A guided orientation tour introduces you to the most important temples. After lunch you may rejoin the guide to visit the inside of some of the more significant pagodas. Alternatively, you can hire a bicycle or horse-drawn cart and explore this fascinating area on your own. Late afternoon the guide takes you to watch the sun setting over a field of glowing pagodas by the river.
Saturday 8th October: A full day excursion to Mount Popa, a national park and believed to be the sacred home of powerful ‘Nats’ (spirits). On top of a rocky crag is a picturesque complex of monasteries, pagodas and shrines which can be reached via a winding, covered walkway. Lunch is taken at the Mount Popa Resort.
Sunday 9th October: After breakfast join the guide to explore some of Bagan’s local markets selling wood carvings, fabrics, longis and rattan goods. See Myanmar’s famous lacquerware being made. Alternatively, you can hire a bicycle or horse-drawn cart and explore this enchanting area on your own. Mid-morning, the ship sets sail for Mandalay.
Monday 10th October: Continue sailing up the river until Road To Mandalay arrives at the little Burmese village of Shwe Kyet Yet in the early afternoon. After lunch enjoy an excursion to Sagaing considered to be the living centre of the Buddhist faith in Burma and famous for its silversmiths who still work in much the same way as their ancestors did.
Tuesday 11th October: Visit Maymyo, a colonial hill station set high in the mountains. Soak up the atmosphere with its cool climate, English style houses, colourful market and beautiful botanic gardens. A typical Shan lunch is taken at a colonial house. Return to the ship for a final dinner on board.
Wednesday 12th October: After an early breakfast, you are transferred to Mandalay’s airport for your onward flight to Inle Lake. This exquisite stretch of water is known for its calm beauty, colourful festivals and the ancient traditions of its inhabitants. On arrival at Inle Lake you will board your own local boat to take you to the Inle Princess Resort. In the afternoon enjoy an excursion to the picturesque ruins of Indaing on the west bank which is the ideal time of day to experience this magical spot.
Thursday 13th October: Enjoy an unforgettable full day boat trip on Inle Lake - a photographer’s dream. Witness its calm waters dotted with floating vegetation and fishing canoes, to scenic high hills providing the perfect backdrop. See the lake’s unique “leg rowers” - the Intha people, visit Nga Phe Kyaung Monastery, one of the lake’s most historic religious buildings, famous for its “jumping cats” and see silk weaving on wooden handlooms.
Friday 14th October: Leave your hotel in the morning by boat, followed by a transfer through pine-clad hills to Taunggyi, capital of Southern Shan State and a former British hill station. Visit the local market and a cheroot factory.
Saturday 15th October: In the morning, transfer from Lake Inle to Heho Airport for your flight to Yangon where they may be time for a last minute visit to famous Scott’s Market before flying to Bangkok and then finally London.
Sunday 16th October: Arrive London.



THE ROAD TO MANDALAY SHIP
